You will conduct a process recording at your practicum site with the support of your site supervisor. A process recording can be used in work with individuals, groups, families, organizations and communities, and allows you to examine your advanced generalist practice knowledge and skills, as well as your social work values.
Assignment Instructions
Review and use the Process Recording Template in the Resources to complete this assignment. In your process recording:
Identify a client or client system to conduct an interview, with the permission and supervision of the site supervisor.
Acquire client or client system consent to conduct the interview to complete the process recording. (While you must obtain your client’s written consent, do not submit the Client Consent Form to Capella. Ask your supervisor where it should be stored (usually in the client’s file).
Use a recording device, with the client and site supervisor consent, to record the interview and review the content after completion of the actual interview.
Complete the background information in the Process Recording Template (that is, your name, date of interview, client’s name—create a pseudonym to protect the client’s confidentiality—list of individuals present at the interview, purpose of the interview, and a basic client description).
Fill up the columns of the Process Recording Template as follows:
In the first column, record the word-for-word (verbatim) interview between you and client or client systems.
In the second column, you share your feelings and emotions experienced during the interview. Include any reactions.
In the third column, identify social work skills, theories, and conceptual frameworks used in the interview (for example, strengths-based perspective, active listening, empathy, and silence).
In the fourth column, identify the core competencies used in the interview (for example, engage diversity and difference in practice and identify as a professional social worker).
After completion of aforementioned columns, you will respond to the five (5) questions at the end of the Process Recording Template. Please use professional writing conventions (APA formatting, citations, etc.) in your responses to these questions. These questions are as follows:
Summarize your impressions of the interview or meeting with the client or client system.
How can the experience gained from the interview or meeting be used to promote social and economic justice?
Describe how you engaged in the promotion of diversity during the interview or meeting.
Discuss how critical thinking, leadership skills, and the use of technology can be used in enhance future interviews or meetings.
List questions to ask the site supervisor to improve your social work knowledge and skills.
You are then expected to share the process recording with the site supervisor. Request that the site supervisor review the process recording and add comments to support your continued development toward advanced generalist practice.
Submit the completed Process Recording Template to the courseroom in this unit. Reminder: Do not submit the Client Consent Form to Capella!
