Step 1: Closely Read and Annotate the Shared Reading “The Question of Cultural Appropriation.”
Step 2: Compose a Free write- Conduct a Free write responding to the following questions:
What is the rhetorical situation of “A Question of Cultural Appropriation”? Based off of your rhetorical analysis, do you think that this article effectively communicates to its audience? How so?
What audience is the author writing for? How do you know this?
What is the purpose of this article? What does the author want to say? Does the author want to audience to do know anything? Do anything?
What medium is this article published in? Print, electronic?
Is this article scholarly or popular? Why does this matter?
How would you describe the tone and word choice of this article? What does the way this article was written reveal?
When was the article published? Was anything relevant happening culturally or socially?
Do the authors use ethos, pathos, or logos? Do any of these appeals help strengthen in the article?
Step 3: Brainstorm and Exit Slip- Due: __________Take your free-write and create a Brainstorm Cluster. From this formulate a thesis and write it on your Exit Slip. Submit to D2L Assignments.
Step 4: Compose Outline – ____________. Based on the above question, your in-class work, and your Brainstorming activities, conduct an outline that includes your thesis(should state your opinion on the effectiveness of the piece and forecast supporting points), topic sentences (should prepare the reader for what’s to come in the paragraph) for 2-3 supporting points, and two supporting quotes from the text. Outline should be typed and replicate the formatting from the Sample Outline (on D2L). Print a copy and bring to class.
Step 5: Compose Rough Draft – _______ Follow your completed outline and draft 1.5 full pages. Print. Bring one hard copy for Peer Review..
Step 6: Peer Review- Revise, Edit, Proofread- You will be asked to participate in Peer Review sessions and Workshops. Peer Review cannot be made up.
Step 7: Complete Final Draft- ________Using your Peer Review comments, and Workshop activities to revise and edit your Draft. The Final Draft must be 3 full pages and include a Works Cited on page four. Submit one electronic copy to D2L (under Assignments) by the start of class.
