This discussion is designed to see if you can apply economics to real life situations. Please use your own personal experiences to answer the following discussion questions. If you do not have personal experiences, you can share examples of your family and/or friends. This will show that you are able to make connections between what you learn in this class and what you encounter in the real world.
Now it is time to reflect on what you’ve learned in Module 05 and apply them in your daily lives.
Your participation in this Discussion demonstrates the following learning objectives:
Describe what is monetary policy and who makes monetary policy decisions in the United Sates.
Discuss how does monetary policy affect your daily lives.
What to do:
After reading the monetary chapter, share with us how does the Fed conduct its monetary policy. (Note: Please distinguish the Fed from the federal government. They are two separate government entities in the U.S.)
Please use specific examples in your discussion post, such as changes in money supply, changes in interest rates, etc. to answer the following questions:
Which monetary policy is the Fed using now? (i.e., contractionary or expansionary?) Why does the Fed use this monetary policy? Explain your answer in terms of economics.
What does the Fed do during Open Market Operations? How does the Fed raise or lower interest rates? Explain your answer in terms of economics.
Do you and/or your family gain or lose from the current monetary policy? Please share your own experiences with two specific examples. (These two examples must be different kind of examples, i.e. not two mortgage examples or two bank account examples, etc.)
Discussion Directions:
