The research paper constitutes 35% of your grade (35 points). It should be scholarly in nature, drawing material from professional literature – books, scholarly articles, and scholarly or professional websites. The project should be professional in its presentation, using Chicago style or APA format. It must have a strong theological foundation, using literature on psychology and religion (not just psychology) as the underpinning for the work. That was her comment when I sent my outline as this: My research paper will focus on the life of William James and how he related his religious experiences to the psychology of how some religious traditions come to be. What I
think is most interesting about William is that he originally wanted to be a scientist yet anything
that went against someone’s pure human experience in his eyes he could not agree with. His
personal experiences May reveal to us The pattern and direction of developments emerging in
our own cultural form of psychology. James claims that religion is a compromise of the feelings,
acts and experiences of the individual. By saying this, he claims that psychology’s contribution to
religion was the study of inner religious phenomena. I want to include William James’ famous
philosophical position called pragmatism because He would rather focus on the roots or the
increased meaning that is brought to our life through the connection we have with religion. I will
explain in detail the three major streams of influence which shaped James’s thoughts on religious
experience through the inner self. These major influences include Academic scholarship in the
history of compar- ative religions; The rise of the metaphysical or mind-cure movement in
popular American culture; and Historical interest in the psychology of religion within the
broader disci- pline of academic psychology. The most important conclusion of James’s studies,
however, finds that academic psychology has nearly forfeited its involvement in understanding
the nature of religious experience.
