The Ethics of Advertising to Children: Balancing Business Interests and Social Responsibility

Examine a business issue of your choosing that has ethical implications.

  • For  example, research the arguments (both for and against) regarding  advertising to children, paying a living wage, requiring union  membership, or selling tobacco.

Research and present the leading opinions and comment on the validity of the arguments. Which side is more compelling? Why?

Instructions

  • Develop a 16 to 18 (16-18 of CONTENT, not counting cover/references) slide PowerPoint presentation
  • Include  detailed speaker notes for each slide OR present your slides via Video  and submit the link for the video with your slide deck
  • Support  your presentation with a minimum of 3 credible academic references,  properly incorporated into the body of the work (speaker notes, footer,  after bullet point).

Guideline for PowerPoint Presentation

Step 1: Choose a Business Issue

Pick one with clear ethical debates and abundant research. Good options:

  • Advertising to children

  • Paying a living wage

  • Selling tobacco products

  • Gig economy labor rights (e.g., Uber drivers)

  • Data privacy in tech companies

👉 Select the one you can easily find arguments for and against in peer-reviewed or credible academic/business sources.

Step 2: Structure Your Presentation (16–18 Slides)

Slide 1 – Title Slide

  • Title of your issue (e.g., The Ethics of Advertising to Children)

  • Your name, course, date

Slide 2 – Introduction

  • Brief background of the issue

  • Why it’s ethically significant in business

Slide 3 – Objectives of the Presentation

  • List at least 3 strong arguments in favor

  • Support with data/examples (e.g., economic benefits, consumer freedom, business growth)

Slide 10–12 – Arguments AGAINST

  • Support with data/examples (e.g., exploitation, harm to vulnerable groups, inequality)

Slide 13 – Validity of Arguments

  • Critically evaluate strengths and weaknesses of both sides

  • Use evidence from scholarly articles

Slide 14 – Ethical Analysis

  • Apply 1–2 ethical theories to weigh arguments (e.g., utilitarianism may support one side, duty ethics another)

  • Use proper APA citation

Step 3: Speaker Notes

For each slide:

  • Write 100–150 words in the speaker notes section explaining the points in detail (this replaces reading off the slide).

  • This ensures you hit word depth equivalent to a paper.

Step 4: Sources

  • Business Ethics Quarterly

  • Journal of Business Ethics

  • Credible books on CSR & ethics
