Schizophrenia…. incredibly misunderstood, incredibly common (1 out of every 100 persons will suffer from Schizophrenia at some point in their life). But not all Schizophrenia looks the same. Some will have one psychotic episode, once in their life and never again. One & Done! Others may have recurring symptoms, but it doesn’t keep them from normal functioning. Some, however, are actively symptomatic and must deal with their disorder daily.
I believe a lot of the misunderstanding of this disorder comes from the media. Hollywood continually produces movies the show Schizophrenia as either a horror, or a comedy. So for this assignment, I am going to have you watch a movie that Hollywood claims is schizophrenia. I WANT YOU TO BE CRITICAL! Watch, take notes and compare what you are seeing to the reality of what schizophrenia is. Write up a reflection. What symptoms were correct? What was exaggerated? What was realistic? What was embellished? Shoot for about a 1 page critical analysis. Use your textbook as your primary resource to support your views.
Here is a list of movies (many are available on Amazon Prime, Netflix, On Demand, Youtube, etc.) If you do not have access to the internet, you can always rent many of these from the college or your local library (free) or Redbox.
