. Content
• Introduction that briefly prepares the reader for the paper and its contents. Shoot for something that takes up % a page or less. In general, it should present the basic thesis of the paper -in this case, a summary description of your answer to the question your paper is answering. Answer one of the questions, telling me which question you are answering in the introduction
How can you use research findings, concepts, and theories in the field of psychology to help you reach goals you have for your life? How do the research findings, concepts, and theories in the field of psychology help you understand yourself better?
At least seven different, specific terms, concepts, or theories from the field of psychology that you learned about in this class, in at least four different units/chapters, are clearly defined in the paper, preferably through paraphrasing the lecture slides, textbook, or an external source.
• Put the term/concept in bold or in an easily noticeable color when you first use it in the paper to make grading easier for me. You can use more than seven.
. When I ask you to include specific terms and concepts what I am referring to is a key concept or idea. For example, one concept is conscious vs. unconscious thought. That counts as one term or concept, not two. Also, intrinsic/extrinsic motivation/incentives is one concept, positive and negative reinforcement is one concept, and reappraisal or reframing is one concept. In addition, with something like Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, you could pick two different needs listed, and if you discuss each in depth, with associated information from psychology that could count as two concepts. You cannot have more than two of Maslow’s the needs count for more though, because I want you to apply in your paper many different ideas from different modules in the class.
• Also, “social psychology” is not a concept, it is an area of psychology. That is too broad to count as a concept. Similarly, “the mind” is too broad, as is “mental illness.”
The more you convince me that you have really learned something from a variety of different areas of psychology

The more you convince me that you have really learned something from a variety of different areas of psychology in this class, have thought about it, and have applied to yourself, the happier I am going to be.
The terms/concepts/theories you define are used to answer the question being answered in the paper. Remember to pick and state one of the two options
By the end of the paper, I should feel like I really know you better than I did at the beginning. Tell me specifics about yourself to provide examples in the paper.
You use at least two reputable sources in addition to the sources required in this class. One of these sources has to be an academic source.
See the video on how to use the college library website to identify a good source for your paper.
. The academic source you find should be an article from an academic journal in the field of psychology or a book by psychologists or psychiatrists that presents information from research in the field. This should not be a self help book or other popular work, but a work for other psychologists or psychiatrists to read.
. You should use the sources to add to what you are saying about a specific term, concept or theory. For example, if you are writing about the testing effect from the memory chapter, you could identify an article in a journal where a study on the testing effect is reported. Perhaps the article described a study where the researchers found flashcards to really improve recall memory, improving encoding, and you are saying in your paper that you are going to quiz yourself when you study using flashcards. You could write in your paper that in their study on techniques that improve encoding, Smith and Jones (2016) found using flashcards to greatly increase memory for semantic information. You would include an in text citation in APA format as written above, or at the end of the sentence (Smitch & Jones, 2016). By the way, I invented that source. You would need to find a real one. In your paper, you could briefly describe the study, but should only briefly describe it.

The references page at the end of the paper should begin on a new page.
Other info:
. You should cite the lecture slides or textbook or another source when you write about the meaning of a term, concept, or theory, or about what researchers have found to be true in their studies. See the info on APA style references in the folder for the assignment.
Headings for sections other than the introduction should be used. See the template for the paper I have provided for you. These headings should be centered. No abstract should be included in your paper. Organize the paper topically. Use paragraphs to help organize your ideas. Each section of the paper can have more than one paragraph. Each section can include multiple terms. Or
concepts potentially, depending how you organize your paper. You should write in the first person when writing about yourself.
• Proofread for grammar, spelling, flow, and clarity.
. Do not plagiarize. If you are using sources that are academic or non-academic you need to cite these, I will give students no credit for the paper if they plagiarize.
