Please number your assignment by step, and you should answer each step as a separate
question. You do not need to write an introduction or conclusion. You do not need to
restate the questions. Focus on the economics

1. Provide an example of taste-based discrimination and an example of statistical
discrimination, both against older workers. Does the description of ageism
provided in the article seem more in line with a taste-based or statistical model of
discrimination? Justify your argument with specific evidence from the article.
2. Describe how you would design an observational study to find evidence of age
discrimination in hiring. What data would you need, and what empirical results
would you want to analyze? What evidence would convince you that there is age
discrimination?
3. Describe how you would design an audit or correspondence study to find
evidence of age discrimination in hiring. What data would you need, and what
empirical results would you want to analyze? What evidence would convince you
that there is age discrimination?
4. Suppose that older workers are paid less than mid-career workers on average.
Make three separate arguments that this wage gap is driven by (1) differences in
preferences, (2) differences in acquired ability, and (3) differences in constraints.
Be sure to include an example each of differences in preferences, acquired ability
and constraints that might apply to older vs. mid-career workers.
5. In class, you’ve learned about workplace discrimination on the basis of race,
gender, and LGBTQ+ identity. Choose one journal article that we’ve discussed
and consider how the results may have been different when considering the
intersection of that group and age (i.e., how is discrimination different for older
vs. younger members of the group studied). How would you modify their study to
find evidence of age discrimination? Be sure to cite the journal article by title or
author name and year.
