The key challenges (at least 2 challenges each) that this topic/issue poses for:
Organizations – include which type/s are likely to be most impacted (e.g. large, small, certain industries, employing certain age or mix of employees, having a specific structure), and how (e.g. high employee turnover rate, public relations or ethical problems, increased costs, lower employee engagement, etc.).
Leaders in those organizations – include which type/s of leaders (e.g. team leaders, department heads, CEOs, HR managers, entrepreneurs) and how they are challenged (e.g. existing ways don’t work anymore, need for new skills or traits, clashing values).
Implications of each of these challenges for change/s needed or made in organizations and the leadership in organizations. Tie clearly with multiple course topics, e.g. organizational change (e.g. which type/s of changes, what were/will be likely resistances to change), leader’s emotional intelligence (e.g. which dimensions of EQ did they demonstrate or should have demonstrated and failed to do so), effective vs ineffective leadership based on the Path-Goal Theory, different leadership approaches, etc. Note that this will require you to read and research some textbook chapters/topics in advance, i.e. before we get to discussing them in class. Be specific about the impact, e.g. specific changes in actions, steps in the process, policy change/s should include exactly what and how.
Imagine that your team is a Leadership Development Consulting or Executive Coaching firm and:
Explain at least 3 actions you would recommend to the leaders you identified above in order to ensure that their organization effectively handles the changes. For instance, changing company structure and culture, using a different style based on the Path-Goal Theory, moving to a different base/s of power and influence, different leadership approach, EQ, communication channel/s, etc.
Elaborate on the actions/recommendations to include your suggestions for how. Your team should do additional research to find benchmarks, i.e. best practices or example/s from actual organization/s utilizing that type of action (e.g. use of the organizational structure/culture you recommend, training, development, hiring or onboarding practices).
Based on your recommendations, identify specific ability/skill/competency and specify how you recommend the organization proceed to develop those in their current leaders (provide specific examples for leadership development and specify which the organization should provide and how individual leaders can proceed in terms of self-development (give examples, e.g. specific book, TEDtalk, good article for reading, etc.
Your team is required to conduct in-depth research on your topic and gather information from:
At least 3 academic research/journal articles (in which the authors have themselves reviewed other sources and conducted first-hand research, i.e. collected data via interviews, surveys, or experiments) available through databases such as Business Source Complete and Academic Source Complete on the Geneseo Library web-page (if you need guidance on using these databases, I recommend talking early with the reference librarian, Mr. Alan Witt).
And at least 3 other respected/professional sources (e.g. Wall Street Journal, McKinsey & Company, articles on SHRM website, business magazines like Fortune, Fast Company, Bloomberg Business Week, HRMagazine). A good addition (not required but may add) would be to interview or survey employees and/or managers who could shed light on your topic based on their first-hand experiences.
