Multiculturally Competent Counseling Presentation

The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with the opportunity to create and deliver a presentation concerning conducting multiculturally competent counseling with a diverse group of individuals. Each group/person should prepare a 15 minute presentation that could be given to a group of school or clinical counselors at a professional conference. . The content of the presentation should focus on the competencies of knowledge of the diverse population and culturally appropriate intervention strategies.  In other words – best counseling practices when working with your population of choice.  Take what you have learned in class, in the readings and through independent research to prepare your presentation.

Things to consider including in your presentation are:

1) What counseling considerations should be considered when working with this population?  What may prevent someone from your population of choice from seeking counseling services?

2) What trauma-informed treatment techniques have been found to be effective in working with this population?

3) How could the client’s own personal life experiences/worldview impact the counseling relationship in positive or negative ways?  What can the counselor do to prevent negatively impacting the counseling relationship?

The population you choose for your presentation should be different than the population you chose for your immersion experience.

You will be recording this presentation with audio and uploading it here for your classmates to view.  The presentation is due by week 5. Between week 5 and week 6 view all your classmates presentations and leave them some constructive feedback on what you saw.  The classmate feedback will be part of your presentation grade.    • Barriers to seeking counseling (e.g., stigma, language, access, financial constraints).

2. Trauma-Informed Treatment Techniques

   • Highlight evidence-based practices (e.g., CBT with cultural adaptations, narrative therapy, group counseling, mindfulness approaches).

   • Address how these techniques are effective for your chosen population.

3. Impact of Client’s Worldview on the Relationship

   • Discuss positive impacts (e.g., resilience, strong family/community ties).

   • Discuss challenges (e.g., mistrust of systems, cultural misunderstandings).

   • Provide counselor strategies for minimizing harm (e.g., cultural humility, active listening, adapting interventions).

Step 4: Plan Your Presentation Structure

• Introduction (2 minutes): Introduce your population and why cultural competence matters.

• Main Body (10 minutes): Cover the three required areas (considerations, trauma-informed techniques, client worldview).

• Conclusion (3 minutes): Summarize best practices and implications for counselors.

Step 5: Prepare Your Slides & Recording

• Create 10–12 slides (keep them visually clear, not text-heavy).

• Add speaker notes or a script for smoother delivery.

• Practice to ensure your presentation fits within 15 minutes.

• Record with audio (using PowerPoint, Zoom, or another tool) and save your file.

Step 6: Submit and Engage with Peers

• Upload your recorded presentation to the discussion forum.

• Watch classmates’ presentations between Week 5 and Week 6.

• Leave constructive feedback (point out strengths and suggest one or two areas for improvement).
