In 1690, the royal cosmographer in New Spain, Don Carlos Sigüenza y Gongora, published “The
Misfortunes of Alonso Ramirez.” Scholars have debated this account’s fictional or historical nature
for a long time. Analyzing the event described in “The Misfortunes” andadditional contemporary
evidence, Fabio López Lázaro argues this work is a historical record “full of distortions and lies.”
1 He later indicates that despite the improbable story of Alonso Ramírez, viceroy Count of Galve
supported him.2 López Lázaro emphasizes there were political reasonsthat motivated Galve to side
with Ramirez and to order Sigüenza y Gongora to write downhis story. For his part, the shipwrecked
man had to demonstrate he was a loyal subject of the Spanish king and another victim of the
enemies of the Christian ruler.
After reading the translation of “The Misfortunes of Alonso Ramírez” and the introductory study
by López Lázaro, answer the following question: Does “The Misfortunes” illustrate the dynamic
interactions between the New and the Old Words in early modern times? (This is not a yes or no
question. You must advance an argument). In your paper, you must consider viceroy Galve’s political
interests and how Ramírez’ account fitted within the larger phenomenon of early modern piracy.
