when each system appears to have attractive components. The purpose of this assignment is to aid you
in becoming familiar with insight- and action-oriented counseling theories by initiating the development of
your own evolving theoretical orientation.
1. Discuss the role of insight-oriented counseling by answering the following:
a. what is the counselor’s role in facilitating the client’s development of insight?
b. how might insight-oriented counseling help clients become more fully functioning?
2. How might you use the action-oriented expressive therapies with clients whose use of language is
limited (e.g., age such as a child- versus adult client, disease, or cultural difference)? Provide one
example.

FAQs on Essay #4
Q: Do I discuss examples? Should they be hypothetical? How much theory of the therapies should I discuss?
A: It might be helpful to lay the groundwork a bit by diving back into a brief explaination of the the therapies someone is discussing and then why they might pose certain advantages with the particular populations where language is limited. On the other hand, one could just dive right in to application and a demonstration of their thought process. It is possible to do a hypothetical example, a series of hypothetical examples or no hypothetical examples, but it makes the most sense to do at least one example as the prompt suggests. The idea of this essay to for the student to really think about the **application** of these theories. This is the highest level of learning we are asking for which is why examples (even if hypothetical) are going to demonstrate learning this material at the level the department is seeking.
Q: How do I answer this question about which theories to use?
A; I like to frame this question as an exercises in shoe shopping. No matter what kind of counseling someones does, they are going to want at least a couple of very comfortable and reliable shoes (therapies). Of course again, this is going to be hypothetical, but it is an important exercise in attempting to apply what you have been learning all semester.
This question is a mini version – a precursor to the same exercise on a larger level in Counseling graduate programs. Make an attempt to describe the kind of footwear (therapies) that you at this point in time, see yourself putting on and walking around in. I know at this point it really is like a little kid walking in big shoes. This is okay! In fact, it is just right. But the sooner you get used to seeing what it is like to try them on the better. Not perfection. Just an attempt to try them on and pick a couple out. Tell me why you like those “shoes”! And most importantly **you have the right to change your mind, swap out the whole closet and get a different set at any moment** We just want you to be a saavy shopper of theories; to show that you know what is out there for you and the people you will be walking alongside:)
So, which shoes (therapies resonate with you? Which do not? Why? I would go back and look at each one and ask myself which could I see myself using? Which would I like to learn more about because I still don’t understand it? Which is just a no-go? Why? **It is okay not to fully understand each one.** There will be much more opportunity to do so later.
And while we are talking about shopping, what is already in your own closet? By that I mean, there might be theories right in “your own backyard”. Mindsets, quotes, the smallest pinterest self-help whatnot could likley be traced to these therapeutic framework. Maybe you are already skeptical of some of these and recognize its limitations. So that thing that is “right in your backyard” is like a flower that belongs to a species, genus, order, class, phylum and so on. That is one place to look. Another is that some students are already working as aids and they are already using theories…they just may not be aware of what theory is underpinning what they are doing. It does not matter where you learned it, but rather whether it is something you resonate with.
