In his essay “The Naïve and Sentimental Novelist,” Orhan Pamuk writes that fiction is fundamentally different than other forms of art because a novel has “a secret center.” Your assignment is to choose one short story we read during the second half of the semester and explain the “secret center” of that story. That is, your thesis must answer the question: What is the secret center?
Context of assignment:
A common type of academic argument is the interpretation of what a text might mean. Scholars call this kind of interpretive operation “a close reading” of the text, or “a textual analysis.” Instructors expect students to perform this kind of analytical operation with proficiency, as the mastery of interpretative skills gives students the tools they need for thinking and writing in and outside their fields.
As the skill of textual analysis is so important, our second essay assignment of the semester will introduce you to the demands of interpreting a single text—in this case, a short story. For this essay, you will offer your interpretation of what the story is most essentially about. How can you explain and describe the essence of the story?
In a conventional summary, you would mostly be giving the straightforward details of the story: the who, what, when, where, and how. For this assignment, those details will emerge—as should the technical aspects of an author’s rhetorical style, such as diction (word choice), syntax (sentence structure), tone, and means of conveying subtext—but they should unfold as part of your explanation of the story’s meaning. Unlike a straightforward summary, which usually would not provoke much response, your interpretive explanation should be arguable. It should invite analysis, as well as display impressive original thinking.
To help you with this operation, I encourage you to incorporate ideas from one or more of the essays about fiction we read (by Parks, Pamuk, Wood, Pinckney, Lee, Robinson, and Smith).
Requirements:
The essay must be between 4-5 pages (about 1,500 words), 12 pt font, Times New Roman, double spaced, paginated, and have a title.

All sources must be cited using MLA format. (Cite sources parentheses at end of sentence OR as footnotes.)
A bibliography or work cited page is NOT required. You should refer to the sources in the essay itself.
