I need a 2-3 sentence response to the following post discussion. Be sure to cite references if used, however it is not required for the response.
I am in group 1 and our topic is the effects of secondhand smoke inhalation in early life. Secondhand smoke is defined as the inhalation of other’s tobacco smoke either from the burning end of their tobacco product or the smoke they exhale (Salem et al., 2020). Secondhand tobacco smoke is a public health issue for people of all ages, but it is more detrimental to children because of the inhalation of more air per body volume compared to adults (Salem et al., 2020). The previous statement is referring to the fact that children breathe at a higher rate, so they take in more pollution than adults. My first article performs a study that investigates neurobehavioral performance in SHS exposed children between the ages of 10 to 12 years old. A previous study has already confirmed that postnatal environmental tobacco smoke exposure alone, or in association with prenatal exposure, increases the risk of behavioral problems such as conduct problems in school-age children (Salem et al., 2020). This study is important and will be beneficial to our topic because it is a study that directly researches the effect of secondhand smoke exposure in children and shows that it does have a negative neurological effect on them. Exposed children had more unsatisfactory performance in attention and visuomotor skills than children who were not exposed (Salem et al., 2020). My second article will be beneficial as well because it also researches how secondhand smoke effect children neurologically and makes a connection between secondhand smoke and ADHD. There is a significant association between exposure to secondhand smoke and ADHD and serum cotinine is a biomarker reflecting current exposure (Abdel Hamed et al., 2019). Both looked at the subject of our topic and performed a study on children and the neurological effect secondhand smoke has on them.
