History and Primary Source Research Paper
Students will write a minimum ten page combined history (Backman textbook and/or recorded lectures) and primary source paper (Backman’s Sources for Cultures of the West). We have covered many broad themes over the semester – religion, philosophy, politics, etc. Students will write a history of how the institution of the Catholic Church (not the religion of Christianity) evolved, or at times devolved. At times strong Popes, then reform movements, etc. Be analytical. For example, for the first few centuries Christians were persecuted, so you could use some of those documents by Paul and others. Then Constantine became Christian and he wanted to unify the issues that separated different branches or ideas, so he issued the Edict of Milan. After that there were times when you had strong Popes who became corrupt, so monastic movements began; followed by strong Popes and new calls for reform. End the paper with Luther breaking from the Church.
Then supplement your paper by using Backman’s Sources for Cultures of the West starting with Chapter 7 to and including Chapter 12. The Sources Book has primary sources, documents written by people that lived during that specific era). Students select a minimum of ten sources from a minimum of five different chapters.
Minimum 10 pages, double-spaced, proper citings after each paragraph, Arial, 12 font.
After each paragraph, just cite for the main text (Backman, page number) and for the primary sources (Sources, page number)
The Primary Source Research Paper is worth 15% of the final grade.
