The purpose of the analytical paper is for students to demonstrate their ability to critically examine and analyze a social issue through a sociological/criminological lens. Students will be required to do the following:
– You will focus your paper around the following four point model of Doing Sociology.
The four points are explained below. You did not have to organize your paper around these four points, but you must make sure that you cover the four points in your paper.
o 1. Understanding: What is going here?
What is this issue about? What background information should we know about to understand this issue? Who are the relevant actors? What groups or individuals are affected by it directly and indirectly? Why is this issue significant; in other words, why should we care about it?
o 2. Analysis: How do we make sense of this issue sociologically?
How can you understand this issue from a sociological perspective?
What sociological theories or concepts help you understand it? Have you studied this issue in college—particularly in your sociology coursework? What is the “bigger picture” to which this issue speaks? If you were teaching a course on this issue what would you say about it and what sociological ideas would you apply to it?
o 3. Reflection: How does it connect to your life?
How much did you know about this story before beginning the project? Where did you learn about it? What is your perspective on this issue? Why do you feel this way about it? How does this story affect your life directly and indirectly? Why are you interested in this issue? How do you see this issue affecting you in the future?
o 4. Action (Praxis): What can we do about it?
After understanding, analyzing and reflecting on this issue, what action are you taking to address this it? In planning an action you should strive to be creative, strategic, and effective. Think of your purpose, your audience, and your approach. Why did you take this action? What other actions were you considering? What did you hope to accomplish through this action? Why was this goal viable? How do you know if you were successful in meeting your goals? If you had more resources (time, money, etc.) what actions might you take? In choosing a course of action, you should tap into your intellectual curiosities and be as original as possible. Action can take many forms such as disseminating information through educational materials (a pamphlet, a book, a lecture, a presentation) or works of art (i.e. poster, collage, video, painting, poetry, play). Others may take political action such as writing letters to elected and non-elected officials, creating a petition, participating in an advocacy group, organizing a protest, or joining/starting a boycott. Still other forms of action include educating yourself further (through readings, course work, and research) and changing your own actions (as a consumer of goods and services or as a producer of the social reality).
