For your final exam, you will write an argument essay that answers the question in the essay prompt below.
Essay Prompt:
First, read the two articles about using science to artificially increase our lifespans from Unit 5 of your textbook. Medical professionals and scientists are continually working on ways to increase our lifespans, and they now have the knowledge and technology to double our lifespans. Many people like the idea of living longer. They hope to fill their lives with meaningful experiences. On the other hand, longer lifespans could create more problems, such as overpopulation and environmental damage.
In your opinion, is it a good idea to double our lifespans? Why or why not? Give reasons and examples to support your opinion.
Your essay should include:
at least five paragraphs: an introduction, two body paragraphs explaining one reason each, one counterargument-refutation paragraph, and a concluding paragraph.
a thesis statement that clearly states your opinion in your answer to the essay prompt. Your thesis statement should be at the end of your introduction.
a topic sentence at the beginning of each body paragraph telling the reader what the focus of the body paragraph will be.
lots of supporting details in your body paragraphs – both general and specific.
a concluding paragraph that not only summarizes the thesis of your essay, but also predicts and/or calls to action.
cohesive devices like transitions that connect ideas logically between sentences and paragraphs.
Other Requirements:
Use MLA Format (heading, title, indented paragraphs, double spaced, font size 11-12).
Your typed essay should be about 600 words long.
DO NOT use outside sources or readings in your essay except for the ones from your textbook. Your own observations or experiences should be used for your examples.
