For your final exam, you will revise the first essay you wrote in this class, the Personal Responsibility essay. You are now returning to the first essay you wrote in class with the benefit of the knowledge you gained throughout the semester. Many of your earlier drafts did not identify a true ethical dilemma, although they did often take a clear moral stance. Remember, an ethical dilemma is a decision making problem between two moral imperatives, neither of which is unambiguously acceptable or preferable.
Write an essay that takes a position on one of the ethical dilemmas we discussed in class, prompted by the book, South Side, the This American Life podcast episode, and the Black Mirror episodes we discussed in class; you may write about both, or just one of the episodes. You may also include any of the readings we discussed related to segregation, an argument Moore makes, or one that the speculative science fiction series, Black Mirror, makes as well. In your introduction, describe the dilemma, making sure to include the different perspectives or positions. In class, we have discussed ethics as well as ethical dilemmas; there are many in your source materials; be sure to select one, and focus on that particular dilemma. Then, in your thesis statement, argue for your position about the ethical dilemma. In other words, what would you do in the ethical dilemma you just described? You will support your position with reasoning based on your personal experiences, your unique background, and your core beliefs as they relate to your chosen dilemma. You will also address the counter-arguments to demonstrate that you have considered objections or limitations to your position before you come to your conclusion.
