Discussion Topic It is natural to be ethnocentric or to evaluate other people’s actions and cultures based on our own actions and cultural norms. When we compare our own culture to another’s culture, we usually decide our culture is superior. Ethnocentric thinking causes us to make wrong assumptions about other people and their ideas, which results in premature judgments. To overcome this flawed way of thinking, we must avoid assumptions and remember that other cultures have their own beliefs, values, and traditions. For more information, Click on Harvard Business Review’s ( https://hbr.org/2012/10/collaborating-across-cultures ) Contemporary managers must learn about other cultures, must avoid prejudgments, and must be respectful of other cultures. Most importantly, we must apply cultural metacognition to see different perspectives through their cultural lens. We can inspire creative collaboration by appreciating the opinions of everyone. To avoid wrong turns and head-on collisions, we must navigate relationships with other cultures by understanding cultural differences and appreciating other points of view. PART 1 In your original post, answer the following: You live and work in the USA. You must go to the country that your parent company is located in (choose either Europe, China, Africa, or Japan) and you have to travel to the parent company to present a redesigned product that you and your colleagues just developed. This redesigned product corrects the flaws that caused numerous customer complaints, returns, and lost revenue. Your parent company is in the country you chose (either Europe, China, Africa, or Japan); however, this is the first time that you have visited that country. How can you prepare for your trip to make sure you do not practice ethnocentricity? Give three examples of how cultural metacognition will help during this trip. What are the two cultural differences that you will need to accommodate on your trip? PART 2 In your responses to your classmates, address the following: State whether or not you agree with your classmates’ approach to alleviating ethnocentricity and practicing cultural metacognition. Justify your opinion about their approach.
