Client Background Details: All The Things (ATT) is a home and dry goods shop with a focus on local and handmade goods including jewelry, books, plants, ceramics, stationery, candles, gift items, personal care products and much more. The ATT team consists of eight team members, most of whom have been with the business for at least seven years.
Business, however, has been stagnant, and leadership would like to diversify their clientele to hopefully increase revenue. The founder hired three new team members who bring fresh perspectives and approaches to the retail experience but even with the best of intentions, the move toward new and different has proved to be difficult.
New ideas (e.g., social media and influencer marketing, strategic collaborations, etc.) and new approaches to processes and systems are often dismissed or shot down by the more seasoned staff members who see the new staff as “inexperienced” or “too young to know what they’re talking about” while the new team members see their methods as “stale and outdated.” Differences in personality have also created tension and issues for all involved. New staff don’t feel supported or empowered to affect real change in the store and wonder why they were hired in the first place.
The Work: ATT is looking for a consultant to help leadership identify potential barriers, challenges and opportunities to foster an inclusive workplace where everyone works as one team and all feel welcomed, valued and supported.
Review the case study above, and make effective recommendations to your client for productive forward movement.
Paper: Present your client with a 4-5 page report (not including your title and reference pages) to explore these issues and make effective recommendations for productive forward movement. In addition to a proper introduction and conclusion to your report, the body should include the following:
Discuss how inclusion contributes to the workplace, and use the optimal distinctiveness theory to identify which quadrant new staff members currently fall into (including the levels of belongingness and uniqueness).
Discuss the specific inclusion-focused issues among ATT team members, and explain how ATT might benefit from an inclusive leadership approach.
Break down how the ATT leadership team can employ each part of the assessment-challenge-support (ACS) model to develop themselves as inclusive leaders.
Please address each question in the order asked, and provide evidentiary support for your comments.
