Chaining in Behavior Analysis: Functions, Methods, and Practical Applications

Assignment 2

Choose an example of a sequence of behaviors that can be taught as a chain.

Use your example to answer the following questions in a paper that is at least 3 pages and no more than 5 pages. Graphs, flow charts, and tables can be used to illustrate the chain.

1. Define chaining and how it is used in behavior analysis.

2. Describe your example of a chain by writing out the steps in the chain.

3. What are the two functions of each of the intermediate steps in the chain? Use examples from your chain when you answer the question.

4. What is the function of the final step in the chain?

5. Pick one method of chaining to train the sequence of steps and describe in general how you would do this.

6. Use at least 3 references to support your answer, and use them as in-text citations.

Please note: Your assignment should be submitted in a Word Document format using Times New Roman 12. The assignment must use APA format (See link to APA publication style in the course site resources.)  Please include an appropriate heading on your paper and references to support methods or procedures used.

1. Read and Understand the Task

  • You are writing a 3–5 page paper on chaining in behavior analysis.

  • You must include:

    • A definition of chaining.

    • An example chain (with steps).

    • Functions of intermediate steps.

    • Function of the final step.

    • One method of chaining explained.

    • At least 3 scholarly references in APA format.

2. Set Up Your Paper Format

  • Open Microsoft Word.

  • Use Times New Roman, size 12, double-spaced.

  • Insert page numbers and a title page if required by your instructor.

  • Use APA 7th edition formatting.

3. Create a Clear Outline

Your paper should flow in the following order:

a. Introduction (½ page)

  • Briefly introduce behavior analysis and where chaining fits in.

  • State your chosen sequence of behaviors (example chain).

  • End with a thesis statement (e.g., “This paper explores chaining in behavior analysis, outlining its definition, the functions of steps within a chain, and the application of a training method.”).

b. Define Chaining (1 page)

  • Provide a clear definition of chaining in behavior analysis.

  • Mention how chaining is used to teach complex behaviors.

  • Cite at least one scholarly source.

c. Example Chain with Steps (1 page)

  • Pick a real-world example (e.g., handwashing, brushing teeth, tying shoes, making coffee).

  • Break it down into clear, sequential steps (Step 1 → Step 2 → Step 3, etc.).

  • Use a flow chart, table, or bullet points to make it visually clear.

d. Functions of Intermediate Steps (½–1 page)

  • Explain that each intermediate step serves two functions:

    1. A conditioned reinforcer for completing the previous step.

    2. A discriminative stimulus (SD) signaling the next step.

  • Use examples from your chain.

    • Example: Turning on the faucet (reinforcer for approaching sink + SD for applying soap).

e. Function of the Final Step (½ page)

  • State that the final step leads to the terminal reinforcer (natural reinforcement).

    • Example: Clean hands after handwashing.

  • Discuss why this makes the behavior chain meaningful.

f. Training Method (1 page)

  • Pick one chaining method:

    • Forward chaining (teaching from first to last step).

    • Backward chaining (teaching from last to first step).

    • Total task presentation (teaching the whole sequence at once).

  • Describe how you would implement it with your example.

    • Example: Backward chaining with handwashing—start with drying hands so the learner ends with reinforcement, then gradually add earlier steps.

g. Conclusion (½ page)

  • Summarize main points: definition, example, functions, method.

  • Reinforce importance of chaining in teaching complex behaviors.

4. Add References

Use at least 3 peer-reviewed or scholarly sources. Example sources:

  • Cooper, J. O., Heron, T. E., & Heward, W. L. (2020). Applied behavior analysis (3rd ed.). Pearson.

  • Miltenberger, R. G. (2016). Behavior modification: Principles and procedures (6th ed.). Cengage.

  • Peer-reviewed journal articles on chaining applications.

Format them in APA 7th edition both in-text and in a references list.

5. Review and Finalize

  • Proofread for grammar and APA compliance.

  • Check that the paper is 3–5 pages (excluding references and title page).

  • Save using the naming convention:
