[1.] Psycholinguistics
The segmentation problem in language acquisition refers to the challenge of learning where linguistically meaningful chunks (e.g. morphemes or words) start and stop. Suppose an alien species descended to earth and started speaking an entirely novel language. Review some research studying the segmentation problem, and
then design an experiment that would allow you to measure (human) participants’ abilities to segment the novel alien language, and explain how it would be able to show the difference between participants who can and cannot segment words. Be sure to specify the hypothesis/research question; the experimental paradigm; the procedure; the data to be collected and analysed; and predicted results (i.e., what the data will look like for participants who can vs. participants who cannot segment the language).
