Both Baldwin and Friedan’s books and essays were described during their time as controversial, of course, for very different reasons. Regardless though, both tackled some serious issues and employed a similar strategy to deal with them. Baldwin and Friedan brought their respective concerns to the forefront of our public consciousness through the written word. In other words, they did so by writing about them. What did Baldwin and Friedan write about? What was the “weight of white people in the world” that Baldwin talked about?
