Behavior Chains in Applied Behavior Analysis – Assignment 2 Guide

Assignment 2

Choose an example of a sequence of behaviors that can be taught as a chain.

Use your example to answer the following questions in a paper that is at least 3 pages and no more than 5 pages. Graphs, flow charts, and tables can be used to illustrate the chain.

1. Define chaining and how it is used in behavior analysis.

2. Describe your example of a chain by writing out the steps in the chain.

3. What are the two functions of each of the intermediate steps in the chain? Use examples from your chain when you answer the question.

4. What is the function of the final step in the chain?

5. Pick one method of chaining to train the sequence of steps and describe in general how you would do this.

6. Use at least 3 references to support your answer, and use them as in-text citations.

Please note: Your assignment should be submitted in a Word Document format using Times New Roman 12. The assignment must use APA format (See link to APA publication style in the course site resources.)  Please include an appropriate heading on your paper and references to support methods or procedures used.

🔴 Step 1: Understand the Assignment

  • Length: 3–5 pages (not counting cover and references).

  • Format: Word document, Times New Roman 12, APA style.

  • Content: Answer 6 key questions using a chain of behaviors as your example.

  • You may use graphs, flow charts, or tables to illustrate the chain.

  • Use at least 3 scholarly references with in-text citations.

🔴 Step 2: Select Your Example Chain

Pick a sequence of behaviors that can be taught as a chain. Examples:

  • Washing hands

  • Making a sandwich

  • Tying shoelaces

  • Brushing teeth

  • Logging into a computer and opening an email

Choose one and stick with it throughout the paper.

🔴 Step 3: Structure Your Paper

Use APA formatting with headings. Suggested outline:

Title Page
APA format (student name, assignment title, course, instructor, date).

Introduction

  • Briefly introduce behavior chains in applied behavior analysis.

  • State the chain you’ll be analyzing.

1. Defining Chaining

  • Define chaining.

  • Explain how it is used in behavior analysis to teach complex behaviors by breaking them into smaller, teachable steps.

  • Cite at least one scholarly source.

2. Description of the Chain

  • Write out the steps in your chosen chain (numbered list or flowchart).

  • Example (handwashing): Turn on water → Wet hands → Apply soap → Rub palms → Rinse → Turn off faucet → Dry hands.

3. Functions of Intermediate Steps

  • Explain that each intermediate step has two functions:

    1. Serve as a cue (discriminative stimulus) for the next step.

    2. Act as a reinforcer for completing the previous step.

  • Provide examples from your chain.

4. Function of the Final Step

  • Explain that the final step results in the terminal reinforcer, the ultimate goal of the chain.

  • Example: Clean hands after washing.

5. Training Method

  • Choose one method (forward chaining, backward chaining, or total-task presentation).

  • Describe how you would use this method to teach your chain.

  • Example: Backward chaining for handwashing—start by teaching the last step (drying hands), then add earlier steps gradually.

6. References

  • Include at least 3 scholarly sources in APA 7th edition style.

🔴 Step 4: Tips for Success

  • Use APA in-text citations throughout.

  • Add a flow chart or table to make your chain steps clear.

  • Keep explanations clear and connect theory to your chosen example.

  • Proofread for grammar and APA formatting.
