Each year, researchers identify top ethical and moral issues in that year’s current workplace. Some common items on this list include harassment, bullying, employee theft, and violating company Internet policies. The current challenges in the workforce include tension and strained relationships resulting from politically charged and social justice issues around the world, particularly in the United States. Ethical issues and dilemmas surface due to inappropriate or nonstandard behavior. This behavior ranges from sarcasm and emotional outbursts and could have dangerous results (Franklin & Guerber, 2020). One needs only to watch or read today’s trending news for graphic details on what is going on in the U.S. and around the world. Largely, these issues fall under the category of civility. Leadership decisions can be tricky, at best, particularly when the leader rejects the behavior but empathizes with the offender.
As a member of your organization’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) task force, one of your team leaders has approached you for advice on an incident of violence between two members of her team. The altercation occurred when Joseph overheard Max use a derogatory term when blaming Lu Ming (an employee of Chinese descent), for his daughter’s illness, because of a virus that was suspected to have originated in China. Joseph pushed Max out of anger over Max’s insensitivity toward Lu. Although the team leader feels empathy for Joseph and his reaction to Max’s disrespect toward Lu, she must address this issue for the sake of unity within the team.
For this assignment, prepare notes for your discussion with this team leader. Begin with a brief background on the definition of an ethical dilemma while keeping in mind that your organization has a code of conduct to consider. Develop a 5-point plan for helping the team leader address the issue between Joseph, Max, and Lu. Video record what you will say to the team lead, using the Kaltura tool listed in the Weekly Resources, and your prepared notes. Refer to “Spotlight on Skills” for best practices when creating a presentation. You may find the Week 3 assignment on engagement helpful when preparing your response.
Length: 5 to 7-minute video accompanied by 2-4 pages of notes. You may list your references at the end of your notes.
