As indicated in the course syllabus, and as already discussed in class, your
last assignment for the semester will be a term paper and a brief oral class presentation,
which overall will be worth about 20% of your final grade.
In this paper you will discuss a contemporary European issue or topic of your
choice from a geographical perspective.
Your selection of a topic may be guided by thematic interests (ex: “Immigration and
European Societies”, “European Standards of Living”), a national, regional, or local case
study (ex: “The Most Recent EU Members and their Integration”, “Belgium and Its
Bilingualism”, “Living in post-Brexit London”), or any combination of them (ex: “European
regionalism in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea area”, “Contemporary Ethno-Nationalism in
Europe: The Case of Sarajevo, Bosnia”). You should make good use of your textbook to
identify both possible topics and initial references for your research. The only constraint that
is imposed on your choice of a topic is that it has to deal with recent or contemporary issues
or developments – it has to be pertinent to the life of Europeans today.
An important aspect of your paper will be its integrating and discussing relevant
documents and sources of information. Books and journal articles, newspapers and
magazine pieces that you will individually research will form a major component of your
work. While I encourage you to use your lecture notes and textbook, you should also make
sure to demonstrate a sufficient amount of individual initiative in your investigating and
documenting your topic.
Your written piece should be fully redacted and be between 6 and 8 typed pages (12-
pt. font, 1.5 line spacing) in length. It should include clear and complete bibliographical
references to the articles or books cited. References, quotations and citations must follow
conventional practice. You should also feel free and indeed are encouraged to incorporate
any illustrations (maps, tables, diagrams, etc.) provided that you discuss or comment on
them in the paper. Note that such illustrations will not count in your total number of pages.
Of course, your papers must be original work. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and
will result in a failing grade for the assignment and a report to the academic authorities at
KU.
