Anthropology and Medicine
Research in medical anthropology has demonstrated that, when medical caregivers are working with culturally different patients, culture is a critical variable in the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. Some hospitals and clinics in the US with significant immigrant populations have to take into account the supernatural beliefs that patients bring with them to a medical setting. For example, a hospital in Brooklyn postponed the official opening of a new clinic for Chinese immigrants by twenty-four hours. Although the clinic was set to open on April 24, 2006, hospital officials were informed that, according to Chinese numerology, the number 24 is considered “unlucky,” so they waited to open until the 25th.
In addition to the date of the official opening, clinic officials have to be sensitive to other traditional Chinese beliefs. For example, because the Chinese associate the color white with death, the clinic designers painted the walls shades of pink and yellow. Moreover, chefs in the hospital’s kitchens have learned to make rice porridge, a widely favored comfort food. Had this hospital opened a clinic for immigrants from the Middle East rather than China, they would have applied anthropological insights by facing patients’ beds east (toward Mecca), so they could pray comfortably five times a day as their faith requires; by ensuring that male doctors do not examine female patients; and by not touching patients with their left hands.
Questions
What are the main problems raised in the case study?
What kinds of questions would an anthropologist ask?
How would you resolve the situation?
Tips:
The whys and the hows are the most important here. For example: how do you know that these are the problems? How do you know that this is the best solution for the situation? I am not interested in what the thing is because I can read that for myself. Rather, I am interested in how you arrived at your own conclusions and why you think that way.
What concepts do the anthropologists draw on, and how can you use that same knowledge to come to a deeper understanding of what’s happening?
