In his study of GM’s management structure, The Concept of the Corporation, first published in 1946, Peter Drucker presented an analysis of corporate bureaucracy that was quite different from the analysis that William Whyte presented in The Organization Man just ten years later. Compare and contrast Whyte’s and Drucker’s analyses. Why do you think their interpretations of the way in which large center companies were being managed were so different?

“William Whyte’s The Organization Man discusses how individual ethics within organizations has changed over the years and created this new social ethos. Corporations were once built off of the Protestant ethos which stated pursuit of individual salvation through hard work, thrift, and competitive struggle was at the heart of American achievement. This new social ethos, which stemmed from the rise in Big Business embodies a belief in the group as the source of creativity, a belief in belongingness as the ultimate need of the individual, and a belief in the application of science to achieve the belongingness. This new ethos fostered mediocrity, groupthink, and lack of interest in profit maximization. Whyte sees the organization ethos as undermining the cultural values that makes American industry great. Peter Drucker’s account from GM’s management structure discussed the greatness of GM’s multidivisional management system. Drucker saw the key problem stemming from too much centralization that created a lack of communication and operating problems. He advocated for creating committees that could act as middle men and bridge the gap between functions/divisions to create a more decentralized structure with specialization. Druckers views Businesses from a structural and organizational stand point, where Whyte takes into account the social ethos that have created a loss of individuality, he argues the organization is undermining the cultural values that make American Industry so great.”
