Discussion 2: Discuss the Four Major Categories in Relation to Your Organization

Instructions

Hugos lays out four major categories of the supply chain (p. 44):

1. “Plan”

2. “Source”

3. “Make”

4. “Deliver”

After reviewing all four major categories in your text, discuss each in relation to your organization. You may choose a company if you are not working or have a company to discuss.

Contributions must display original thinking and good knowledge of the subject matter, including links and references to sources to support your arguments. A minimum of three posts are required for each discussion (1 post and 2 replies). Additionally, make sure you cite sources you reference in-text and under a “References” section in APA format. Minimum 250 words.

Step-by-Step Guide for Your Week 1 Discussion Post

This assignment requires you to connect Hugos’ four major categories of the supply chain (Plan, Source, Make, Deliver) to your organization (or a company of your choice). You’ll need to write at least 250 words, use APA citations, and create one main post + two replies. Here’s how to structure your discussion:

Step 1: Write an Introduction (2–3 sentences)

  • Briefly introduce the organization you are analyzing (e.g., your current workplace, a past employer, or a well-known company like Amazon, Walmart, or Starbucks).

  • State that you will apply the four categories—Plan, Source, Make, Deliver—to show how supply chain operations support organizational goals.

Step 2: Discuss Each Category in Relation to Your Organization

1. Plan

  • Define: Planning involves forecasting demand, aligning resources, and setting goals for efficiency (Hugos, 2022).

  • Application: Explain how your organization uses data, software, or historical sales to predict demand and schedule production or staffing.

2. Source

  • Define: Sourcing refers to obtaining raw materials, goods, or services from suppliers.

  • Application: Discuss how your company selects vendors, negotiates contracts, or ensures quality and cost efficiency.

3. Make

  • Define: Making involves producing the goods or services offered.

  • Application: Describe your company’s production or service delivery process (manufacturing, assembling, or providing professional services). Highlight efficiency or technology used.

4. Deliver

  • Define: Delivery includes logistics, distribution, and customer service.

  • Application: Show how your company ensures timely deliveries, uses shipping networks, or manages customer satisfaction.

Step 3: Write a Conclusion (3–4 sentences)

  • Summarize how all four categories work together to create a smooth supply chain.

  • Reflect on one area your company does well (e.g., fast delivery) and one area that could improve (e.g., sourcing reliability).

  • End with a forward-looking statement (e.g., “Strengthening supply chain planning will ensure the organization can remain competitive in a changing market”).

Step 4: APA Citations

Cite Hugos (the course textbook) and at least one additional credible source (such as a company report, business journal, or supply chain article).
