Choose an example of a sequence of behaviors that can be taught as a chain.

Use your example to answer the following questions in a paper that is at least 3 pages and no more than 5 pages. Graphs, flow charts, and tables can be used to illustrate the chain.

1. Define chaining and how it is used in behavior analysis.

2. Describe your example of a chain by writing out the steps in the chain.

3. What are the two functions of each of the intermediate steps in the chain? Use examples from your chain when you answer the question.

4. What is the function of the final step in the chain?

5. Pick one method of chaining to train the sequence of steps and describe in general how you would do this.

6. Use at least 3 references to support your answer, and use them as in-text citations.

Body of the Paper

1. Definition of Chaining (½–1 page)

Define chaining in applied behavior analysis (ABA).
Explain how it breaks down complex behaviors into smaller, teachable steps.
Support with a scholarly source (e.g., Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2020).

2. Example of a Behavioral Chain (1 page)

Choose an everyday skill (e.g., brushing teeth, handwashing, tying shoes, making coffee).
Write out each step in sequential order.
Consider including a flow chart or table showing the sequence.

3. Two Functions of Intermediate Steps (½–1 page)

Each intermediate step acts as:
1. A conditioned reinforcer for completing the previous step.
2. A discriminative stimulus (SD) for the next step.
Use examples from your chain (e.g., squeezing toothpaste is reinforcement for removing the cap, but also the cue for applying it to the toothbrush).

4. Function of the Final Step (½ page)

The final step produces the terminal reinforcer (e.g., clean teeth after brushing).
Explain why this reinforces the entire chain.

5. Method of Chaining (1 page)

Choose one method: forward chaining, backward chaining, or total task chaining.
Explain your chosen method in detail.
Show how you would use it to teach your example behavior.
- E.g., with backward chaining, you might teach the last step of brushing teeth first (rinsing mouth), then gradually add earlier steps.

6. References (APA format)

Include at least three scholarly sources. Suggested:
