3 questions need to be answered
1. The development of the printing press and the Protestant Reformation cross history at nearly the same time. Both benefitted from the existence of the other, though much of the European populace were generally illiterate at the time. In your opinion, which came first, the chicken or the egg? Did printing spur the Reformation, or did the Reformation give substance to, and thus spread the use of printing? Your answer should give evidence for both sides, and then your analysis of the question.
2. The early 19th Century saw the rise of mass media. How did this development change the way information was delivered? How did media change during this time period of mass media dominance, circa, 1820-1995? Why? What is yellow journalism? Concerning radio, describe the differences in its development between the United States, Great Britain, and Germany. And finally, compare and contrast the era of mass media (newspaper moguls, radio and television networks) in which a relative few controlled the information flow, but also established trust among its audience, to today’s social media environment, where anyone can be a producer as well as a consumer of information, but we cannot always trust the source. Analyze.
3. Social media is rapidly becoming one of the most dominant media forms, and for many, it is the main source of information. In your opinion, how does this affect society as a whole? How did social media, for example, affect what became known as the Arab Spring? Most people prefer an open democracy, but by its definition, history has shown pure democracy can be akin to anarchy and mob rule, and some control is necessary. Some will argue the same is true for social media. Without some control, do you think social media can descend into such anarchy it is rendered irrelevant? But does control put too much power into the hands of a select few, echoing the original mass media moguls? Have the internet giants gained that control because there was no regulation of them? In your opinion, if you had the power, how would you want social media to develop into the future?
